CESS Hyderabad PhD in Development Studies Admission 2017

The Centre for Economic and Social Studies, Hyderabad in collaboration with Telangana University, Nizamabad invites applications for admission into PhD Programme in Development Studies for the academic year 2017-18


Subjects Offered for PhD Programme

1. Economics

2. Sociology/Anthropology/Social Work

3. Geography/Geo-Informatics

4. Political Science/Public Administration

5. Development Statistics (With Specialization in Econometrics)

6. Commerce & Business Management (Related to Research Areas of CESS)

No. of Seats: 20 (Twenty only) in all the above six subjects put together



Candidates who possess one of the following qualifications are eligible to apply

A Post-Graduate Degree with at least 55% marks or its equivalent Grade [50 percent marks for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/Differently-abled categories] in the concerned subject from any recognized university


An M.Phil Degree in the subject concerned from any recognized university


Candidates qualified in the National level tests in UGC-NET, for JRF, ICSSR Fellowship holders, Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship holders, and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET).


Candidates in UGC – FDP (Faculty Development Program)


Selection Criteria

The admissions are based on an Entrance Test in one of the above subjects and Interview for eligible candidates.



The reservation policy of the Government of Telangana will be followed


All the eligible candidates are required to attend the interview at their own cost. The interviews will be held at CESS, Hyderabad on Saturday, the 13th August 2017


The selected candidates will have to attend the compulsory Course Work held at the CESS for Two Semesters, spreading throughout the year consisting of three papers. There are 25 seats in all the above six subjects put together and in few cases, the selected candidates may be permitted to register with other universities, as per the rules laid down by the Research Program Committee (RPC)


Entrance Test and Interviews

The Entrance Test will be conducted on Sunday, the 13th August 2017 from 11.00 am to 01.00 p.m. at CESS. The interviews for short-listed candidates will be conducted at CESS on Saturday and Sunday, the 26th and 27th August 2017


Only short-listed candidates will be called for Interview. Final selection will be based on the overall performance in Entrance Test and the Interview.  The candidates are required to attend the Entrance Test and the interview at their own cost



Application forms can be obtained from CESS on payment of Rs.200/- either in Cash or Demand Draft drawn in favour of “Director CESS” in any nationalized bank from 10.00 AM to 5.00 PM during working days


Application forms and the guidelines can also be downloaded from the CESS website www.cess.ac.in


The filled in application forms along with necessary enclosures and the registration fee (Rs.800/- for applications directly obtained from CESS and Rs. 1000/- in case of downloaded applications) by Cash or DD drawn in favour of “Director CESS” payable at Hyderabad should reach the Dean, Division of Graduate Studies, Centre for Economic and Social Studies, Begumpet, Hyderabad-500016 on or before 05.00 PM on Thursday, the 03rd August 2017


The Registration Fee is non-refundable. All updates relating to the admission process will be available on the website www.cess.ac.in
