Steep hike in NET fees

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the University Grants Commission (UGC) have increased the fees for the National Eligibility Test (NET) for lectureship and junior research fellowship in science and technology disciplines by more than 150 per cent.
The notification for the multiple choice question examination to be held on June 21, 2015, has prescribed the fees for application for general candidates as Rs. 1000. Candidates from the Other Backward Classes-Non Creamy Layer have to pay Rs. 500 whereas candidates from Scheduled communities (SC/ST) and those who are physically and visually challenged need to pay Rs. 250.
Last year, the fees were Rs. 400, Rs, 200 and Rs. 100 for General, OBC and SC/ST, respectively.
The exam is held twice a year and those who qualify for the junior research fellowship are awarded Rs. 16,000 for the first two years of their research and Rs. 18,000 for subsequent years, after they qualify as senior fellows and register for Ph.D. Universities also offer a contingency grant of Rs. 20,000 per fellow.
