Revised Eligibility Criteria for UGC NET 2017 Exam

In tune with the government’s policy to strengthen university recruiting qualifications and improve standards, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has changed norms to pick up the best while declaring the candidates qualified for teaching jobs

According to the UGC letter addressing Telangana SET, only top 6% of qualified candidates to be declared eligible on the lines of NET. The same proportion would be applicable for the State Eligibility Test (SET) also. Earlier, 15 per cent of the total candidates who appeared for the test were declared qualified. The decision of the UGC to cut down on this comes in view of the High Court of Kerala judgement on criteria for determining eligibility for assistant professors.

The Osmania University has revised the rules for the State Eligibility Test as per directions of the UGC. “With this new rule, the number of candidates qualifying will come down,” said Prof P Yadagiri Swamy, Member Secretary, SET. The SET is scheduled to be held on June 11.

The new norms will definitely be hard to thousands of candidates who appear for the TS-SET, being conducted for the first time after the State bifurcation. The TS-SET Member Secretary Prof. P. Yadagiri Swamy said.

The success of Backward Class students was maximum with 38.45 % while 21.92 % SC students also cleared the test. In comparison, only 16.10 % of the general category candidates could pass the test while among the ST students only 4.45 % cleared.
